April 14th - Vicksburg

The Mississippi River is currently running 50 feet above it's normal level. This day was Monday and they were telling us that it wasn't expected to peak until Friday. All along this bank of the river was a huge concrete levy. At points in the levy were these gates which can be raised or lowered, depending on the level of the river. It's a little hard to see in the photo, but the level of the river is only inches below the top of the gate. In other words, approximately THREE FEET ABOVE the level of the ground where we were standing! Now THAT was scary.
We drove both the Blue and the Red Scenic Tours through Vicksburg and found them quite interesting.

Vicksburg is the scene of one of the biggest battles of the Civil War. We are going to visit the Vicksburg National Military Park tomorrow.
